Golden Oldies

Cloughmills Golden Oldies is a thriving social group which was started by the Community Action Team some 12 years ago. It grew in scale to become an independent group and formally adopted its own constitution on 8th June, 2006. Its prime objectives are to promote fellowship and friendship, to advance education for seniors, promote health and well-being amongst the senior members of the community and to provide interests in recreation, leisure, health and social welfare. Membership is open to anyone of pensionable age.

The Group meets every Thursday throughout the year in the Assembly Hall at Cloughmills Primary School in Main Street from 10.15am to 12 noon. Membership subscription is £5 per annum and a weekly fee of £1. Once there members have a cup of tea and biscuits, they are brought up to date with activities within the Community and some further afield, and this is followed by a few free games of bingo. Occasionally there may be a talk on a relevant subject such as health matters. The setting is very informal and it gives members an opportunity to have a chat with friends and a bit of craic!

Every second Thursday there is a Bring & Buy Sale at the end of the meeting to raise funds.  From March to October on the last Thursday of the month there is a day trip to various destinations. Recent trips have included a day out to Enniskillen, a coastal trip ending up in the York Hotel, Portstewart for a carvery, a trip to Derry/Londonderry and many others. We try to get away for a short break holiday at least twice a year around April and again in September. Recent breaks have included Killarney, The Cotswolds, and Waterford.

Through our association with the Building Communities Resource Centre ( Ballymoney) members are  able to make their  voices heard on topics which particularly affect us as pensioners! We are always open to new members so if you are interested in joining please contact our Chairperson, Mrs Marilyn Gale, at
